How it works

Why our availability check is different

01

Live registrar API check

We query a live registrar API for each domain — real-time registry data, not DNS, not a cached database.

02

No false positives

Registered-but-undelegated domains (no website, no DNS) are still caught. Most tools miss these — we don't.

03

Only .com

We focus exclusively on .com. No TLD noise, no .xyz fallbacks. If it's shown, it's a real, available .com.

The accuracy gap

What most availability checkers miss

There are three ways to check domain availability — DNS lookup, WHOIS query, and registrar API. Most free tools use DNS. Only the registrar API is reliable.

DNS lookup Unreliable

A DNS lookup checks whether the domain resolves to an IP address. But thousands of registered domains have no DNS records at all — they're held by registrants who never built a website. DNS says "available". The registrar says "taken". SharpDomainSearch uses the registrar.

WHOIS query Slow & inconsistent

WHOIS can catch registered domains without DNS, but registry WHOIS servers are rate-limited, inconsistent across registrars, and often delayed by 24–48 hours after a new registration. Not suitable for real-time availability checking at scale.

Registrar API What we use

A live registrar API checks directly against the registry's authoritative data — the same source a registrar queries when you go to purchase. If the API says available, it's available. No false positives, no DNS gaps, no stale cache.

Common questions about domain availability

How do you check if a domain name is available?

SharpDomainSearch checks each generated name via a live registrar API. If the domain has no active registration record, it's shown as available. Results are real-time — the same data a registrar sees when you go to purchase.

Are the availability results accurate?

Yes. We check availability via a live registrar API — results reflect the actual registry state, not a cached snapshot. If a domain shows as available, it's available right now.

What makes a domain name available vs. taken?

A domain is available if it has no active registration record in the .com registry. Even domains with no website can be taken — our live registrar API catches these, not just DNS checks.

Can I search for available domain names for free?

Yes, SharpDomainSearch is completely free. No account, no credit card, no limit on searches. You only pay the standard registration fee when you choose to register a name.
