Comparison — Updated August 29, 2026
Both are free .com name generators with no account required. The difference is what happens after you hit search — whether the "available" list is actually available, and what you get beyond a list of names.
Quick verdict
Both are free, no-account .com generators. Lean Domain Search has been around since 2012, searches .com and .blog, and admits its own results are "95% accurate." SharpDomainSearch checks every result live before showing it, adds AI brandability scoring and a shortlist, and sticks to .com. If you want a list you don't have to double-check, that's the difference that matters most.

Lean Domain Search figures sourced from its own public FAQ page as of August 29, 2026. "Not documented" means we found no public mention of the feature in their FAQ, help pages, or site — not a claim that it definitely doesn't exist. We'll update this page if that changes.
The details
This is the one that matters most. Lean Domain Search's own FAQ states its results are "95% accurate, meaning that about 1 in 20 of the available search results is actually registered." Their fix is client-side: when you click a domain, it re-checks and marks it as taken if it's wrong. That's a reasonable patch, but it means roughly 1 in 20 names in the initial list you're scanning is a dead end you won't discover until you click it.
SharpDomainSearch checks every generated name against a live registrar API (Name.com) before it's shown — the same authoritative source a registrar checks at checkout. If it's on the list, it's available right now, not 95% of the time.
The practical cost of that 5% gap adds up faster than it sounds. If you're scanning 200 generated names for a shortlist of 10 favorites, roughly 10 of those 200 are quietly wrong — and you won't find out which ones until you click through and get bounced at registration. On a real-time checked list, every name you shortlist is one you can actually register.
Lean Domain Search searches .com and .blog. SharpDomainSearch searches .com only in the main results — no .blog, no fallback TLDs padding out the list. If your keyword's .com options are thin, we surface .ai / .io / .co as an optional suggestion when you click into a specific result, never mixed into the primary list.
If you specifically want a .blog domain, Lean Domain Search covers that and we currently don't. For almost everyone else building a brand, .com is the only extension worth defaulting to — see our domain name generator guide on why.
Lean Domain Search's documented feature set stops at generating names and checking availability. SharpDomainSearch adds an AI brandability score to every result — memorability, spelling risk, trademark concern, naming era, and an aftermarket appraisal estimate — plus a session-based shortlist so you can star favorites and compare them side by side without creating an account.
None of that matters if the underlying list isn't accurate. It's an addition on top of getting the availability check right first.
Both tools are free to search and both earn a commission when you register through their link — that's a normal, disclosed business model for domain-search tools, and neither is doing anything wrong by using it. Lean Domain Search routes registrations exclusively to WordPress.com, which is owned by the same parent company (Automattic). SharpDomainSearch routes through Dynadot.
Disclosure: SharpDomainSearch earns an affiliate commission on domains registered through our Dynadot links. We disclose this below every buy button.
Fair's fair — Lean Domain Search has been running since 2012 and is a simple, well-established tool. If you specifically need a .blog domain, or you're already committed to registering through WordPress.com, it's a solid, no-frills choice. Its interface is minimal, which some people prefer over a results page with scores and filters.
SharpDomainSearch is the better fit if you want .com-only results you can trust without a second click to verify, plus AI insight and a shortlist to help you actually decide between candidates.
By their own admission, no — not fully. Lean Domain Search's own FAQ states results are "95% accurate, meaning that about 1 in 20 of the available search results is actually registered." SharpDomainSearch checks every result against a live registrar API, so what you see is what's actually available right now.
Yes — Lean Domain Search searches .com and .blog. SharpDomainSearch focuses exclusively on .com by default, with optional .ai / .io / .co suggestions shown only when you click into a specific result — never as a fallback in the main list.
Not that's documented publicly. Lean Domain Search's FAQ covers search and registration only — no mention of scoring, favorites, or filtering tools. SharpDomainSearch scores every result on brandability, memorability, and trademark risk, and lets you shortlist favorites without an account.
Yes. Both tools are free to search, with no account required. Both earn a commission if you register through their registrar link — Lean Domain Search routes to WordPress.com (owned by Automattic, who also owns Lean Domain Search); SharpDomainSearch routes to Dynadot.
If you specifically need a .blog domain, or you're registering through WordPress.com anyway, Lean Domain Search is a fine, well-established tool — it's been around since 2012. If you want live-verified .com availability, AI insight on every name, and a shortlist to compare favorites, SharpDomainSearch is built for that.
